The "Sweetheart of Pakistan" and "The Nightingale of East" Nazia Hassan's 47th birthday. On April 3, 1965, the ‘Sweetheart of Pakistan’ Nazia Hassan was born – a soon to be iconic figure of the Pakistani pop industry. If alive today, April 3, 2012 she would be celebrating her 47th birthday.

Nazia’s first hit was a pop song “Aap Jaisa Koi” which she sang for an Indian film titled Qurbani at the age of 15. She won a Filmfare award for this song and paved the way for her debut album, Disco Deewane.

The pop icon of the 70s soon became the striking beauty of the 80s and along with her brother produced audio and video hits, forever changing the Pakistani pop music industry.

Even during the conservative era of General Ziaul Haq, Nazia persevered, not faltering in her passion for music and became a celebrity. Among her biggest hits were “Ankhen Milane Wale” and “Dum Dum Dede”.

In 1995 she got married and had her son Arez in 1997. Sadly, Nazia passed away in 2000 after losing a battle with cancer. She however remains a celebrity in the hearts of the 80s’ generation and lives on through her fans and all those who showered her with their love.

Nazia Hassan was a popular singer in Pakistan Music Industry. Nazia Hassan was born in London to an affluent Pakistani family, on on April 3, 1965.

Her Childhood:
As a kid she used to sing around the house with her brother Zohaib Hassan. She was gifted with this incredible nasally voice that was plain yet intriguing. Music was simply a hobby for her and she had never considered singing as a career choice.

Starting Career:
Nazia Hassan managed to get a big break under the direction of Biddu. Her song ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’ from the film Qurbani made her a legend in the Hindi pop music world. She was 15 years old then. The album broke record sales in Pakistan and India and even topped the charts in the West Indies, Latin America and Russia.

Hit Disco Album:
The next year her first album, Disco Deewane (1980) broke record sales in Pakistan and India and even hit number one on the Brazilian charts. The album was followed by Star/Boom Boom (1982), Young Tarang (1984), Hotline (1987), and Camera Camera (1992).

GOD Gifted Voice Quality:
After the huge success of their music which sold millions of albums worldwide, EMI Music International signed on Nazia and Zoheb, making them the first South Asian artists to be signed by an international music label. The vibrant contemporary music scene in the Indian sub-continent owes it success to Nazia Hassan’s redefinition of pop. India Today magazine voted her among one of the 50 people who helped change the face of India.

Efforts and Value in Asian Music Industry:
Pakistan’s vibrant contemporary music scene owes itself to Nazia Hassan’s redefinition of pop. In fact, the biggest nineties bands including the Vital Signs and the Jupiter’s got a platform on “Music ’89″. Nazia also had a seismic impact in India. India Today magazine voted her as one of the 50 people who helped change the face of India. She has contributed to the development of the present isomorphism of Bollywood music and pop: “She set – well ahead of its time – the personal album trend in India”, spawning the likes of Alisha Chinai, Lucky Ali and Shweta Shetty.

Marriage & divorce and Death:
She is known to be the “Sweetheart of Pakistan” and “The Nightingale of East”. Nazia Hassan is still the symbol of grace, sacred beauty and innocence and is frequently compared to Princess Diana as she was known to possess a heart of gold. Nazia spent her teenage between Karachi and London where she would go on to read law at a London University. Nazia was married in March 30, 1995 with Mirza Ishtiaq Baig. This marriage was a complete failure and Nazia Hassan got divorced from her husband just before her demise. Nazia Hassan died in August 13, 2000 due to lung cancer at age 35.

The Nazia Hassan Foundation has been established by Nazia’s family, her parents Basir & Muniza and sister Zahra, in continuation of her life long charitable and social efforts to make the world a better place to live in for all irrespective of color, creed or religion.
